Sleep apnea and chronic snoring can affect more than just your quality of sleep. While occasional snoring is common, loud or persistent snoring may be a sign of obstructive sleep apnea, a condition that causes repeated interruptions in breathing during sleep. Recognizing the signs and seeking professional guidance can help improve your sleep, health, and overall quality of life
What is Sleep Apnea?
Apnea is defined as an interruption in breathing. When several “apneas” repeat during rest, it is called sleep apnea.
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a type of sleep apnea where a physical blockage in the airway, such as the tongue and soft palate, collapses during sleep. With OSA, interruptions in breathing can occur for periods of 10 seconds or longer.
Sleep Apnea Signs and Symptoms
Though the most common symptom is snoring, several other symptoms could point to a person suffering from sleep apnea, such as:
- High blood pressure
- Having a high body mass index
- Feeling tired throughout the day
- Problems concentrating and memory loss
- Gasping or choking during sleep
Sleep Apnea Diagnosis
Bloor Dental Health Centre can help determine if you may be affected by sleep apnea by examining jaw structures; however, a formal sleep study must be conducted by a sleep clinic or physician for you to be formally diagnosed with sleep apnea. This involves a night spent under observation at a sleep clinic. During a sleep study, your sleep patterns, movements, and oxygen levels will be measured overnight to confirm a sleep apnea diagnosis.
Sleep Apnea Treatment
Our dental office provides oral appliances as treatment options for sleep apnea. Oral appliances can help keep the airway open by preventing the tongue from falling back against the soft palate.
A Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD) is secured to the teeth and moves the lower jaw forward. This repositions the tongue forward, helping keep it from blocking the airway and improving breathing while you sleep.
Laser Therapy for Snoring & Sleep Apnea
Laser therapy is a gentle, non-surgical treatment that may help tighten and stimulate tissues in the throat, reducing snoring and improving airflow. It can also be used as a complementary treatment alongside other sleep apnea therapies to help support airway function. Treatment is customized to each patient, and results vary.
